When the Singapore expats first met the Batam Babies
Singapore is a 45 min ferry ride to Batam, Indonesia
The Batam Babies were so excited to see us
My name is Chandra Setiadji, and I'm an Indonesian software engineer living in Singapore for the past 15 years. As a father of a 4-year-old daughter, my wife Mona and I have always been passionate about helping underprivileged children in Indonesia. We believe that education is the key to a better future, and we're committed to making a difference. In 2014, I learned about the educational needs of children in West Papua, Indonesia, through friends from my church. I visited the area and met with a local pastor, promising to provide a better living environment for the children in Batam. We started with 7 kids and grew to support 15 within a year. Today, in 2025, our eldest is a university student, and most are in high school. We're grateful for the support of kind individuals from Singapore and the US over the past decade, who have helped with living expenses, education, and moral support. Without them, our journey would have been much more challenging."
Introducing the Batam Babies
Born in Papua, Indonesia, these children were recognized by a local church as lacking access to formal education, the boys being at serious risk of being forced into gangs and the girls being vulnerable to sexual exploitation. In 2014, a compassionate native Indonesian man named Chandra Setiadji stepped forward and relocated them to Batam, Indonesia where he provided them an orphanage home. Chandra connected with a Singapore charity who helped to provide for the children’s most basic needs.
In 2015, due to chance encounter, a group of expats from Singapore became aware of the children and began visiting and nurturing them. Singapore is a 45-minute ferry ride away, and we visited the kids several times a month before COVID-19 disrupted travel. During our visits, we read the bible in English and Bahasa, we organized outings, treated them to lunch and ice cream, arranged English lessons, guided the girls on hair care, purchased a basketball goal so the boys could have activities at home, arranged academic tutorials sessions, organized arts and crafts, and provided personalized attention.
Additionally, the Singapore expat group partnered with the Singapore charity to ensure the children received basic medical care (i.e. their first ever doctor and eye exams) and kick start their formal education journey. The kids lacked formal documentation thus their ages were estimated. The Singapore expats funded private tutoring to help assimilate and progress through their formal education journey. As a testament to the children’s determination, the Singapore expats provided them with a computer and the kid’s first usage was to complete their homework. Their academic progress has been gradual and steady, and one of them is now in college, a testament to their remarkable journey.
Although, a smaller group of Expats from Singapore continue to visit occasionally, unfortunately, due to COVID, their primary source of support from the Singapore charity was unexpectedly lost. Although the original expats have since repatriated, we remain committed to achieving the goal of assisting all 15 students to complete their education thru high school and some possibly thru university as well, and position them to achieve independence and to become productive members of their society.
